Is Procrastination The Problem?

Hello there,

I tend to procrastinate. How about you?

Did you know it's a habit? I never really thought about it that way until recently and it made perfect sense to me. As we know, habits are formed through repetition. This is true even for the ones that lead to procrastination.

The neural pathways of your brain are literally “trained” to repeat the habitual response to any situation. The more you do it, the harder it is to change.

Think of it like walking the same path to the mailbox every day. You go the same way, at the same time usually without variation because it's what your used to doing. But what if you tried to change your path? How many times would you have to consciously choose the new path before it becomes a part of your routine? For most of us it would take almost a month before our brains would stop defaulting to the old path.

That is literally how your brain creates a habit. Good or bad and you will repeat it until you consciously choose to change it. The habit of procrastination is no different and it often becomes the path of least resistance.

Your brain becomes hardwired to procrastinate, when faced with certain situations. Like stopping to play a game of Candy Crush or scrolling through TikTok when you’re supposed to be writing a new blog post. I'm guilty, I'll admit it! It's just human nature to procrastinate. The trick is to recognize the triggers that cause it and then find a good way to change the habit.

For me, it's when I can't figure out what to do next or I'm not particularly thrilled with the task at hand. I tend to wander off and do something that doesn't require much brain power. It's much easier and more fun, but I know that is not going to get anything accomplished, so have to remind myself that it's okay to wander but not okay to get stuck there.

To do this, sometimes I set a simple 15 minute timer on my phone (can you say; hey Siri set a timer for me) that way I allow myself some play time without getting lost for hours. Of course, there is a lot more to it than that, but you get the idea.
